Regressado três anos depois a esta fase do torneio inglês, Nadal enfrentou uma maratona de 4:48 horas frente a Muller, finalista do Estoril Open deste ano.
Esta é a segunda vitória da carreira de Muller sobre Nadal.
Na próxima ronda, Gilles Muller vai encontrar o croata Marin Cilic, sexto jogador da hierarquia mundial.
Nos outros jogos mais importantes dos oitavos de final da competição, o tenista suíço Roger Federer, quinto do ‘ranking’ mundial, qualificou-se hoje para os quartos de final do torneio de Wimbledon, terceiro ‘Grand Slam’ do ano, ao superar o búlgaro Grigor Dimitrov.
Federer, que procura o 19.º título em torneios do ‘Grand Slam’ e vencedor em Wimbledon por sete vezes (2003 a 2007, 2009 e 2012), superou o 11.º jogador da hierarquia em três ‘sets’, com parciais de 6-4, 6-2 e 6-4, em uma hora e 41 minutos.

Também o tenista britânico Andy Murray, número um mundial e detentor do título, qualificou-se igualmente para a próxima fase de Wimbledon, terceiro torneio do 'Grand Slam' da temporada, ao eliminar o francês Benoit Paire.
Para atingir pela 10.ª vez consecutiva os quartos de final, Murray precisou de duas horas e 22 minutos para vencer o francês, 46.º, por 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-4.
Ainda esta noite, o sérvio Novak Djokovic, segundo cabeça de série, vencedor por três vezes em Wimbledon (2011, 2014 e 2015), vai encontrar o francês Adrian Mannarino, 51.º da hierarquia.
O tenista português João Sousa e o argentino Leonardo Mayer qualificaram-se hoje para os meias finais do torneio de pares do Open da Austrália, ao baterem o sul-africano Raven Klaasen e o neozelandês Michael Venus.
O treinador do Benfica, Bruno Lage, disse hoje que a equipa está a preparar a meia-final da Taça da Liga em futebol com o FC Porto como se fosse "uma final" e elogiou a resposta dos jogadores.
O Sporting voltou hoje às vitórias na I Liga portuguesa de futebol, ao derrotar em casa o Moreirense, por 2-1, mantendo as distâncias para o trio da frente à passagem da 18.ª jornada.
