ZDF German TV interview
Jean Asselborn 'ashamed' of Hungary PM Orban
The influx of refugees into Europe is, in the opinion of Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, "the biggest challenge since the end of war." In an interview on German TV national channel ZDF, Asselborn said he was ashamed of the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Asselborn welcomed the progress on the discussion concerning the possible distribution of refugees, however this is only the start. The entire refugee problem is "not just about quotas".
"Each EU country must understand that the refugee onslaught is a pan-European problem", the minister said in the ZDF interview. He criticised the attitude of the Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban, who had said that Germany alone must cope with the refugees.
Asselborn said strongly; "you have to sometimes be ashamed of this man. He has caused quite a lot of damage. I hope he is not a reference or example for other countries. "
An EU meeting is eagerly waited on September 14 to tackle and find solutions for the refugee problem. Asselborn said it was "devastating" when individual countries must be forced through sanctions to show humanity.
He added: "The image of the European Union has suffered enough."
