Fete de la Musique Dudelange takes place this weekend and as usual organiser John Rech has put together a fantastic programme that showcases some of the top musical talent from both Luxembourg and abroad. John took some time to talk to the Wort about the festival.

Festival Spirit

The festival will feature more than eighty acts across eleven stages throughout the centre of Dudelange and John feels like this year’s line-up is a great reflection of what they have always wanted to achieve.

“We’ve tried to put up a diverse programme and loads of talented acts”, he said. “This year’s edition brings the spirit back, of what we’ve been trying to do over the years. We have two headliners, Puggy and Might Oaks who were discovery acts a couple of years ago so when they arrived hardly anyone knew them and they have just exploded since then."

Puggy were one of the highlights from last year’s Rock-A-Field festival and returned to play a show at Rockhal in November. Mighty Oaks have been taking Europe by storm with their brand of indie folk.

Ones To Watch

John hopes that some of the acts on this year’s bill will be able to emulate their success and he has pinpointed a few that might manage it.

“Van Holzen from Germany and Avec from Austria. They are kind of giving us the idea that they might explode too," he said.

"Van Holzen already did in Germany, they're one of the biggest rock discoveries of the year. So it’s just that spirit of getting these young fresh acts in and it’s really nice.”

Youth Acts

Speaking of young acts, as well as a whole host of established artists, Fete de la Musique Dudelange will also give very young musicians from the area the opportunity to get some on stage experience with a new stage in the park.

“We’re doing that together with the Dudelange Youth Centre and the SNJ”, Rech said. “They are choosing the bands and it gives a different edge to the whole thing. The Youth Stage used to be the first step in to the Fete de la Musique but we have a new step since last year which is the Parc Stage which allows very young kids to be up on stage. It will have students from the music school and from the harmonie municipal.”

In practical terms the there will be free buses going from the surrounding area to the town centre and there will also be a number of park and ride options. Safety is of course a priority for the organisers as well.

“I’ve been asked the question a few times regarding security," Rech said. "We are in close contact with police and of course we will do everything so that people feel comfortable. The spirit of the festival is always good, the weather should be great so everything should be about love and peace.”

Hidden Gems

“I like to stay that every band is like a headliner to us or else we wouldn’t have chosen them and we try to have a diverse programme.” Rech said.

“There are of course those 'secret acts' that people should see. For the Luxembourg audience there’s Serge Tonnar & Legotrip, Go By Brooks, Benny & The Bugs, and Tuys who are a fantastic live band."

"We’ve been following their career, they started on the youth stage and now they are on the main stage playing in the evening.”
