A team of students from St George's International School are to represent Belgium and Luxembourg in a UK chemistry contest after coming top in the regional heats.

'Hydrogen', as the team was known, emerged overall winners from a field of 14 entrants competing in the “Top of the Bench” regional competition organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

They will now go on to represent Belgium and Luxembourg in the finals to be held at Loughborough University, UK, in April.

One of the St George’s students also achieved the highest score of any Year 10 student in the competition.

The "Top of the Bench" competition welcomes teams of four 13- to 16-year-old students, who compete for the Top of the Bench trophy.

The competition starts with regional heats, which include quizzes, presentations and practical experiments.

The regional winners then have a chance to compete against each other in the UK final in spring.
