Translations

‘I am a barbarian in this place because I am not understood by anyone.’

‘Translations’ brings us into the heart of a small farming village on the north west coast of Ireland in the early 19th Century. Each individual in this small close-knit community has their life turned around when a group of English soldiers arrive to create an Ordnance Survey map of the area, which requires all the place names to be anglicised.

We feel the resistance of the more established residents, the excitement of the younger people and the frustrations of coming to know, understand and perhaps even fall in love with people who are from a different culture and with whom we share no common language.

‘Translations’ ranges from comic misunderstandings, mischief-making and romance to jealousy, resentment and threats of brutal reprisals.

How will the community of Baile Beag survive this clash?
