Seed to Tree: Branching out with folk-pop music

(ADW) You may think that Seed to Tree is some kind of gardening project and maybe it is somewhere in the world. In Luxembourg however, it is a young folk- pop band beginning to attract attention for their foot tapping, catchy melodies and acoustic compositions, sounding far from Luxembourgish, but what exactly?

Some say they have a slight Fleet Foxes feel to them, others believe they emanate hints of Irish folk in their music, certainly something they’ve exploited as Seed to Tree make regular appearances at the Pyg Irish pub in Clausen. “A lot of people have told me that I have kind of an Irish accent ..... but I’m just a normal Luxembourgish guy” explained Georges the band's lead singer and acoustic guitarist. “Plus I like a bit of Irish dancing on stage” he grinned.

Indeed a mandolin even makes an appearance in one of the Seed’s songs "Broken Down" enhancing the folk flair to their tunes yet still somehow keeping a pop element to the music. (See video link at the end of the article).

When asked about the name Seed to Tree, drummer Michi explained “on the one hand it's a song by Blind Melon which Ben liked very much, but on the other hand I also see a message in it like it all starts with a seed that is growing and growing and after a while even a small seed can become a big tree”.

Seed to Tree, unlike many bands have not played a mass of gigs, but those they have played certainly got people’s attention. They’ve performed as opening acts for other bands as well as their own concerts and been part of festivals, such as “One Night with Aline” that took place at Lycée Aline Mayrisch last year, plus Fete de la Musique in 2010 and this year in Luxembourg City.

But now it’s time for the Seeds to grow and the trio are currently working on their first EP. With the help of Dan Kamp, from well known local band Birdbones, the 5-track recording is due to be released in September. For many in the music world with an eye on Seed to Tree, this can’t come soon enough.

When asked what else the guys have in the pipeline, Benjamin the bands, guitarist, mandolinist and backing singer stated “A very important concert is coming up: the FUZE Acoustics night where we will play at Casino 2OOO Mondorf in the Purple Lounge with a smooth atmosphere”.

Indeed Seed to Tree will be the first act to play in the series of FUZE concerts at the Purple Lounge on September 20, taking to the stage at 9pm with free entrance.

So it could be said that Seed to Tree are growing, sprouting new buds and branches and will no doubt be blossoming on a stage near you soon.

  • Georges Goerens – Vocals and acoustic guitar
  • Benjamin Heidrich - Guitar, mandolin and backing vocals
