A group of young expatriates who set out to raise funds for cancer charities handed over the proceeds of their first major event on Wednesday.

The Pink Ladies donated a cheque for a whopping 5,000 euros to European breast cancer coalition Europa Donna asbl Luxembourg.

The funds were raised partly through the group's inaugural event, La Vie En Rose, a dinner accompanied by opera and classical music held at Schéiss aux Arquebusiers last June.

“It's great to finally close the event and hand over the money, knowing it's going to a good cause,” said Pink Ladies co-founder Joanna Hein-Hartmann.

The fundraising organisation was set up earlier in 2012 by Joanna along with friends Helen Smith, Annette Wilson and Christelle Elimort with the aim to support cancer charities after each had been touched in some way by cancer.

After their inaugural event the friends were astonished to receive a generous donation of 1,200 euros by a woman called Anne Mulholland. They discovered that Ms Mulholland had raised the money by running the Luxembourg ING marathon solo.

Anne was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2002 and made a full recovery. “Running is a great passion of mine so it was really no hardship for me to do the ING knowing that the money raised will go to such a worthy cause,” she said. The funds were included in the cheque to Europa Donna.

Since being founded, the group has also raised 550 euros for Kick Cancer Into Touch, an organisation supporting cancer charities through sporting events.

And, The Pink Ladies continue to go from strength to strength having been been contacted by individuals wishing to organise rafting and sky diving events.

“I've told people to let us know what they'd like to do and to go for it,” said Joanna, adding: “But, we will need a bit of a break before our next event.”
