In September last year a rule decreeing that only male heirs have the right to the Luxembourg throne was put before the Grand Duke’s Court.

As of Monday, male descendants are no longer preferred and a Duchess is equally likely.

Once Grand Duke’s reign ends, the first born will have the right to the throne regardless of whether a son or a daughter. However although this ruling comes into force, nothing is going to probably change in our lifetime. Next on the hereditary “list” will be Grand Duke Henri’s first born, Guillaume.

This constitutional reform has now been put before the Chamber of Deputies before becoming rubber stamped. This is in fact the first time the succession to the throne ruling has been changed since the Family Pact of 1783.
