(CS/jg) Luxembourg cross-country skier Kari Peters will represent the Grand Duchy at the Winter Olympics in Russia – the only Luxembourg athlete to qualify.
Peters last Friday for the second time fulfilled the Olympic norm in his European Cup qualifying sprint in St Ulrich in Austria. With 99.32 points he scored the best result of his career so far.
Luxembourg's Olympic Commitee (COSL) on Tuesday decided to reward Peters's efforts with a trip to Sochi, where he will take part in the Winter Olympics between February 7 to 23.
This could put pressure on Luxembourg's Sports Minister Romain Schneider, who had previously said that he would not travel to Russia.
With no Luxembourg athlete nominated to attend at the time, Schneider had said that he was not making a political statement, unlike other international politicians who have openly boycotted the Sochi Games over the Putin administration's treatment of minorities, and especially the LGBT community.
Schneider could now be forced to reconsider his decision.
