(AnB) In a letter to the new king of Spain, Felipe VI, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa express their best wishes.
After King Juan Carlos' official abdication on June 18, Felipe VI's reign began on Thursday. The new king ascended the throne in times of continued economic difficulties. Separatist movements persist in Catalonia and the Basque Country and there were calls for a referendum on turning Spain into a republic in the wake Juan Carlos' abdication announcement earlier this month.
In his letter, the Grand Duke says that Felipe VI's reign comes with challenges but also opportunities. Confident that a close relationship to the Spanish people will mark the newly invested monarch's reign, Henri also recalls the "exceptional heritage" bestowed upon Felipe by his father.
Sending a fond greeting to the new queen, Felipe's wife Letizia, the Grand Duke concludes by "paying tribute to the profound friendship that unites our two peoples and which we will continue to foster with heart and dedication."
